Countdown to Mother's Day: Day Eleven Psyche Young

In honor of Mother's Day, Doctoral Mom would like to introduce you to the amazing women that make up the Doctoral Mom group. Join us as we listen to their advice and stories. For day eleven of Countdown to Mother’s Day we would like to introduce Psyche Young. Psyche is a mother to four children and their area of study is Marriage and Family Therapy at Northcentral University.

Motherhood What is your favorite part of being a mother? Can you give us a specific example? "I thoroughly enjoy watching my children develop personalities and their individuality. It makes me feel my most creative when I consider being chosen to bring them into the world!" Doctoral Program What was the most challenging part about starting your doctorate? "Managing time as a therapist, wife, and mother. Still surviving the process. Determined to succeed!" How did you choose your advisor and/or committee? "They were chosen for me."

What is/was your dissertation topic? "Military partners co-parenting online during deployment. How are military families impacted?" What is the most difficult part of the dissertation process? "The literature review and now the recruitment process can be challenging at times."

If you could do something over, what would it be? "I try not to live in a place of regret. I would have preferred to pursue all my education in earlier years."

How did the program impact your relationships (romantic, family, friendships, etc.)? "Time spent away from family has been challenging. There was difficulty getting family members to understand the stress associated with spreading myself in all areas."

What tips do you have that might make it easier for mothers who are thinking about pursuing their doctorate? "Try to find a support system outside of family members to help enhance coping.

" Career What were your biggest struggles and how was Doctoral Mom Incorporated helpful to you? "Doctoral Mom has been a valuable forum where I felt like part of a community of like-minded individuals who shared, in some way, in my experiences. Love the group!"

Is there anything else you want us to know? "Happy to be included and thank you for all you do!"
